AB 1879 Support LetterUPDATE: AB 1879 was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger Sep. 29. Thank you for your support.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger RE: AB 1879 – Toxic Substances in Consumer Products – Support Dear Governor Schwarzenegger: I/We are writing to urge you to sign AB 1879 (Feuer) into law. Ab 1879 will provide the Department of Toxic Substances Control with the much needed authority to regulate toxic materials in consumer products. Many consumer products that we interact with on a daily basis contain toxic substances, including lead and other heavy metals that have been shown to result in serious health impacts. This includes items that come into close contact with children and items used to contain food. In addition to their health risks, these hazardous substances also pose a significant threat to the environment as solid waste or litter as they can infiltrate into our waterways and air and further threaten human health. AB 1879 will allow the Department of Toxic Substances Control to identify chemicals of concern, track them, and take action to protect the public. Furthermore, this bill will allow the DTSC to require manufacturers of toxic consumer products to establish end-of-life management of these products. Assembly Bill 1879 is a long-overdue step towards addressing protecting the health and safety of California consumers and the environment, and we look forward to working with you to ensure its passage. Sincerely,
