AB 2206: Multi-family Recycling Sample Letter(Copy, Paste, and Edit as you please, but also PLEASE send us Copies!) Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger RE: AB 2206 (Montañez) Multifamily Dwelling Recycling -- Support Dear Governor Schwarzenegger: I am writing to ask for your support of Assembly Bill 2206 (Montañez), which is aimed at increasing recycling opportunities at multifamily dwellings through model programs and consumer education. Despite all the achievements California has made in the recycling industry, California's diversion rate is still on the cusp of the 50% mandated by AB 939, the state's waste reduction and recycling law. Curbside collection of recyclables is a key contributor to the state’s diversion rate, yet more than half of all California’s multifamily dwellings do not offer containerized recycling opportunities. AB 2206 is aimed increasing recycling in California by closing the curbside recycling gap for multifamily dwellings. AB 2206 will require owners of multifamily dwellings to notify their tenants whether recycling is available at the dwelling. This will bring a new level of attention to the issue. Providing recycling information to the tenants empowers them, and will increase the opportunities for recycling as well as the general awareness that recycling needs to occur at multifamily dwellings. All Californian's deserve the opportunity to recycle, regardless of whether they live in a single family home or a multifamily dwelling. Currently, more than half of Californians living in multifamily dwellings do not have such an opportunity. As a constituent I urge you to vote "YES" on this bill as it comes before you as the bill proposes several first steps towards providing curbside recycling for residents of multifamily dwellings. Sincerely, YOUR NAME cc: Californians Against Waste (Fax) (916) 443-3912
