CAW Sponsors AB 904 (Feuer), the Plastic and Marine Debris Reduction Act

CAW is sponsoring AB 904 (Feuer),which will address many of the concerns raised by the California Ocean Protection Council.

The issue of marine debris is multifaceted and needs comprehensive legislation to target all sources of pollution damaging our oceans. Legislators are working together this year to tackle the issue of marine debris in full.

  • AB 904 (Feuer) will:
    • Mandate that all take out food packaging in the state be made from recyclable or compostable material.
    • Set minimum recycling rates for take out food packaging materials to be effective 2012.

In addition, CAW is helping to coordinate a "flotilla" of Marine Debris Bills, that include:

  • AB 258 (Krekorian): This legislation would address an industrial source of marine debris by creating a taskforce to monitor preproduction plastic pellet (aka "nurdles") loss.

  • SB 529 (Migden): This CAW sponsored legislation is aimed at increasing the utilization California generate postconsumer recycled plastic by, among other things, establishing an incentive and credit trading system under the existing Rigid Plastic Packaging Container Law.

  • SB 899 (Simitian): This legislation would prohibit by June 1, 2008 a person from manufacturing, processing or distributing a product containing perfluorinated compounds, or chemicals that degrade in the environment to perfluorinated compounds, as defined.
