Plastic Bag Ban: Here's What We're Doing

For the last 18 months, we’ve been engaged in an around-the-clock campaign to end plastic bag pollution. Elements of the campaign have included:

  • Research. CAW staff has compiled the most comprehensive analysis of the environmental and economic impact of single-use bags. We’ve also determined that a shift to reusable bags will create substantially more California Manufacturing Jobs compared to single-use bags.
  • Legislation. CAW has been responsible for drafting and negotiating model legislation at both the state and local level.
  • Legal. This year CAW successfully petitioned the State Supreme Court to consider overturning the plastics industry challenge of local plastic bag bans.
  • Lobbying. CAW staff have met with a majority of members of the state legislature this year, as well as Governor Schwarzenegger and his advisors in an effort to build support for AB 1998. We continue to meet with Assembly Member Julie Brownley and her staff on a weekly basis.
  • Media. Editorials and other public outreach.
