2006 Legislative Wrap-up

The 2006 legislative session is behind us, with decidedly mixed results. While most of the attention over the final month was on the fate of bills on the Governor’s desk, the real story and legacy of this year is the number and range of priority issues that failed to move forward. Among them:

  • Phase out of toxic substances in electronics (AB 2202) - Stalled in Senate
  • Polystyrene Ban (AB 1866) - Stalled in Assembly
  • Increase State Diversion Goal (SB 928) - Stalled in Assembly
  • Battery Redemption & Recycling (AB 2271) - Stalled in Assembly
  • Phase-out Diversion Credit for ADC (SB 1778) - Stalled in Senate
  • Regulatory framework for Waste-to-energy (AB 2118) - Stalled in Assembly
  • Implementation of Marine Debris Recommendations (AB 1940) - Stalled in Assembly

As we begin to identify issues and strategize for 2007, it is essential that as a 'recycling community we look to expanding our tent and prioritizing our solutions. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on this. Please e-mail me at: murray@cawrecycles.org
