Dec 23 - Rethinking Holiday Traditions

Did you know that we throw out 25% more waste this time of year? Listen to Capitol Public Radio's Insight segment with CalRecycle from Monday, for tips on how to reduce your holiday waste.

Here are the top-trending changes as modern consumers rethink holiday traditions.

  • Re-Gifting Glory -- The stigma of re-gifting is pretty much gone now as consumers see the benefits of passing on unwanted gifts to those who would appreciate them. Attitudes are also shifting when it comes to shopping at thrift stores for those vintage finds.
  • Custom Wrapping -- Presenting a gift is now an opportunity to show off your creativity. Reusing paper bags or newspaper is good, but savvy gift-givers are reaching for fabrics, reusable baskets, or reusable gift bags instead for their wrapping needs. The ideas are endless, and that’s part of the fun.
  • Sustainable Shopping -- Buying locally-sourced items like wine, honey, or olive oil allows consumers to reduce their carbon footprint and support the farm-to-fork movement at the same time. Buying from eco-conscious merchants or purchasing energy-efficient gifts provide even more options to find that perfect present.
