Feb 8 - San Francisco Gets Tougher Bag Ban
San Francisco now has the distinction of having the strongest bag ordinance to date, in addition to being the first US city to pass a bag ban in 2007.
Yesterday afternoon the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a new ban on plastic bags, expanding to all retail stores and restaurants in the city limits and adding a 10 cent price requirement on paper, compostable plastic, and reusable bags.
The ordinance will need a signature from San Francisco Mayor Lee before it becomes law, but Lee has already indicated his support. Once signed, the ordinance would go into effect this October for most stores and next July for restaurants.
Regarding the new price requirement on bags, Lee stated, "The intent was never to nickel or dime anybody. But if it takes 10 cents to remind somebody that their habits are in their control, I think that’s something we’re willing to consider doing."
