May 25 - Recycling Created 10,000 Jobs Last Year

New numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that Recycling created 10,000 jobs last year despite the global economic downturn.

According to ISRI President Robin Wiener as reported by Waste and Recycling News, " … the scrap recycling industry is very healthy and poised to expand further, especially if the federal government takes a reasonable and rational regulatory approach... "

This serves to reinforce what should be obvious to everyone: Recycling Creates Jobs.

Imagine a recovered PET Coke bottle moving though the entire recycling process- from collection, sorting, processing and manufacturing. Each step in the process adds value to the material, creating and sustaining jobs at every step. Land filling that same Coke bottle adds no value to the material, drives little to no job growth, and wastes a valuable resource.

Recycling will be a part of our economic recovery. To that end, CAW is sponsoring AB 341 by Assembly Member Wesley Chesbro. This measure would raise our state mandated landfill diversion rate from 50% to 75%.
