Jun 9 - UN Official Calls for Worldwide Ban of Plastic Bags
Achim Steiner, the executive director of the United Nations Environment Program, has called for the world-wide banning of plastic bags. A UNEP report published in April found that the problem of plastic litter pollution is growing rapidly and urgently needs to be addressed at its source on land. Steiner told McClatchy newspapers:
"Single use plastic bags which choke marine life, should be banned or phased out rapidly everywhere. There is simply zero justification for manufacturing them anymore, anywhere."
