June 20 - Australian State Bans Bags

South Australia has banned plastic bags, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

Supermarkets and other retailers will begin a transition phase from January next year, with the ban coming into effect from next May...State Environment Minister Gail Gago says it is a step towards helping the environment. "Plastic bags are an unnecessary environmental nuisance when we clearly have a wide range of readily available alternatives," she said.
