May 15 - Ontario To Reduce Plastic Bag Use by Half

The Canadian Province of Ontario has announced it wishes to reduce the use of plastic bags and try to implement a voluntary, 50% reduction in plastic bag use. Provincial Environment Minister Laurel Broten told Reuters Canada that plastic bag waste reduction was a principle concern for the province:

"Ontarians use almost 80 plastic bags per second - that's close to 7 million bags every day. Reducing the volume of plastic bags that end up in landfills is a top priority for us."

Environmentalists are skeptical, though, that Ontario's bag reduction goals can be met voluntarily. Provincial authorities have said that if the voluntary program does not work they will use bans or fees to meet their goals.
