Aug 14 – West Hollywood Approves First Reading of Plastic Bag Ban
Submitted by Recycling News on August 14, 2012 - 22:25.
Last week the West Hollywood City Council unanimously approved the introduction of a plastic bag ordinance, positioning the City to be the next in CA to ban plastic bags.
A second reading and final adoption is expected August 20.
The city follows other LA County jurisdictions who have already used the County’s Environmental Impact Report to adopt an ordinance. See the full list of CA local bag bans.
The ordinance, banning plastic bags and charging ten cents per paper bag, goes into effect for supermarkets six months after becoming effective and expands to all other retailers who distribute plastic bags half a year later.
According to media, 490 out of 890 stores will be covered under the ordinance—the remaining retail stores are not covered because they do not currently use plastic bags.
