Belmont may be the next city to adopt San Mateo County's foamed polysytrene foodware ban.

The City Council has the item on its agenda for tomorrow evening. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm at City Hall (One Twin Pines Lane, Belmont, CA). Check the meeting agenda, Item 10A for more information.

If approved tomorrow, the ordinance would be formally adopted at a second reading on July 10.

The San Mateo County ordinance was passed in 2011 and went into effect in July of the same year. The County can assist those cities that adopt its ordinance by reference with enforcement, thus lowering their costs of implementation.

Since its passage, several cities have taken advantage of the County's ordinance, including Burlingame, Portola Valley, Redwood City, Half Moon Bay, and Foster City. See the full list of local foam bans in CA.

What you can do:

Send a short note to the Belmont City Council, urging their support of the ordinance. Take action--it only takes a few minutes and you can personalize the letter.

You can also attend the meeting and make a short statement in support of the ordinance.
