The Liberal Democrat party—the UK's third largest political party—is urging Parliament to adopt a tax on plastic carryout bags, the same type of fee that has reduced plastic bag use in Ireland by over 90%.

The party is also urging for a reduction in excess food packaging by requiring retailers to provide an in-store "waste point" where excess packaging can be shucked and recycled.
