San Francisco's ordinance banning the use of foamed polystyrene takeout food packaging in all of the city's 3,400 restaurants goes into effect today. Foamed polystyrene is a principle component of marine debris as it is easily blown by the wind and floats. It is also nonrecyclable.
Restaurants that defy the ban face fees.
