May 16 - Previously Undetected Pharmaceuticals Found in Rivers

Researchers at Baylor University have discovered two new drugs in Texas rivers that have not previously been detected. They included a compound found in over the counter sleep aids and a drug used to treat seizures and bipolar disorder.

While the affects of low levels of pharmaceuticals exposure to humans is not known, low levels of pharmaceuticals in water has been shown to affect fish. Low levels of antidepressants in particular, which are found in many streams, can result in abnormalities in fish behavior and reproduction.

What CAW is Doing:

  • Support SB 966 (Simitian), which would create a take-back system in pharmacies for the safe disposal of unused pharmaceuticals.
