Mar 5 - New Zealand Greens Push for Bag Control

The New Zealand Green Party announced it will start a campaign to urge store owners to cut back on plastic bag use. According to the Green Party, 800 million plastic bags are used in New Zealand annually.

"The plastic bags issue is a reminder that we can all take simple, worthwhile steps to reduce our impact on the environment. If we don't take steps to reduce the amount of waste, the burden ultimately falls on ratepayers to pick up the tab for disposal in landfills."

Options the Green Party would like store owners to consider range from implementing 5-20 cent charges on bags to asking consumers if they would bring cloth bags.
