Jun 27 - Rhode Island Tries to Increase its Recycling Rate

The Rhode Island General Assembly has passed along to the governor's desk a package of legistlation of that would increase recycling statewide by setting target recycling goals, increase the scope of the current program and put in place mandates for businesses of certain sizes to recycle. According to a press release:

The bills increase the types of plastics that can be recycled and set a course for consideration of a five-cent deposit on bottles...the bills also set a 35 percent minimum recycling standard for municipalities, require cities and towns to plan for the diversion of 50 percent of their generated solid waste from the landfill.
