In the New York County of Suffolk, politicians announced last Monday a plan to ban the sale of some incandescent light bulbs by 2012 in favor of the more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. Because CFLs contain mercury, they need to be properly disposed of. However, there is currently no countywide program to collect CFLs in Suffolk, as recycling coordinators acknowledge. The politicians plan on creating a program in the near future to address this problem though
CAW is currently sponsoring AB 1109 by Assembly Member Huffman, which would create incentives for energy efficient lighting, while also asking the CA Integrated Waste Management Board to create a recycling program for end of life CFLs. The bill currently awaits a vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee. Help by sending in your letter of support now!
