Jul 12 - Take Back Measures Gaining Momentum
Take-back measures that use the model of extended producer responsibility to solve environmental problems are gaining momentum in Sacramento, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune. Among the bills highlighted are SB 966 (Simitian), which requires pharmacies to accept unused and expired pharmaceuticals free of charge for proper disposal. Pharmaceuticals flushed down the drain or disposed of in landfills contribute to the growing problem of groundwater pharmaceutical pollution.
Other environmental issues that are candidates for extended producer responsibility laws include unused paint and the safe disposal of compact fluorescents.
