Mar 22 - Emeryville City Council Passes Food Packaging Ordinance

Emeryville is set to pass a food packaging ordinance similar to Oakland's and San Francisco's, which would ban polystyrene and require that takeout packaging be recyclable or compostable.

Cecily Burt of insidebayarea.com quoted Vice Mayor Ruth Atkin as saying the ban on polystyrene is essential for the bay's environmental integrity:

"I participated for years in our shoreline cleanups and the little tiny bits of Styrofoam end up getting stuck in the rocks. It's impossible to collect all that stuff. It gets stuck in the nooks and crannies and birds ingest them."
