Sept 25 - Homer City Council Overrides Mayor’s Bag Ban Veto

Starting January 1, 2013, a plastic bag ban in the city of Homer, AK can proceed as planned.

The City Council approved and adopted the ordinance at the end of August. However, Homer City Mayor James Hornaday vetoed the ordinance shortly after, asking instead for a voluntary program according to media reports.

Fortunately, City Council recognized the need for the policy. Voluntary efforts to reduce plastic bag pollution have failed throughout the world.

Yesterday evening, the City Council had their final opportunity to vote on an override of the veto before the September 28 deadline. The override passed, and the ordinance will remain in effect.

Homer is the fourth city in Alaska to adopt a plastic bag ban. See the full list of local bag ordinances.
