May 25 - Maryland Adopts Law Requiring Apartment Recycling

Share Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signed a bill into law that makes it mandatory for all multifamily complexes of 10 units or more to make recycling available to residents by October 2014.

According to the House Representative Stephen Lafferty, "As the number of renter’s increases, we want to provide more opportunities for them to participate in recycling. We cannot continue to add to our landfills but must support recycling."

This is similiar to CA's multifamily law, where apartment complexes of five units or more must offer paper, plastic, can and bottle recycling to tenants starting July 1st.

We applaud Maryland for passing the measure - increasing recycling access to individuals living in multifamily units directly impacts the recycling rate.
