Nov 17 - Sunnyvale City Council Votes, Staff to Write Ordinance Banning Plastic Bags

In a week where several local governments have either approved or moved forward with their bans against plastic bags, the City of Sunnyvale also made a decisive effort to reduce plastic bag waste. On November 16, the City Council directed staff to write a bag ban ordinance and approved funding for an environmental impact report.

The Council approved $100,000 in funds for the environmental assessment, but staff expects that the cost will be much less.

Ordinance language is expected by early 2011. The ordinance would ban plastic bags and charge customers 15 cents per paper bag in large supermarkets, liquor stores, and large retail stores in Sunnyvale.
