May 7 - San Mateo Expands Pharmaceutical Disposal Program

Recognising a clear demand and need for the safe disposal of unused pharmaceuticals, San Mateo County has expanded its successful program to drop-off locations at law enforcement sites. In most areas of the state, unused pharmaceuticals are currently either flushed down the drain or landfills, both of which contaminate local groundwater and can cause developmental problems in fish and unknown effects on other organisms, including us.

More robust programs for pharmaceutical disposal where pharmacies, not local government, are responsible for the take-back and proper disposal of drugs have been implemented in areas of Washington state and in the whole of British Columbia.
