May 25 â€" Assembly Committee Advances One E-waste Bill; Holds Two

The Assembly Appropriations Committee today advanced CAW sponsored AB 2202 (Saldaña) to the Assembly floor. This measure would phase out the use of toxic materials in consumer electronics. But in a surprise move, the committee held bills to expand recycling for computers (AB 3001 Pavley) and batteries (AB 2271 Koretz).

AB 2202 (Saldaña) will will require manufacturers to phase out the use of hazardous materials. The bill was amended by the committee to extend the effective date to 2009. A the European Union begins phasing out toxics in electronics this July. AB 2202 must be voted off the Assembly Floor next week.
