Mar 30 - Europe Considers Banning Free Plastic Bags

According to media reports, the European Commission (EC) hopes to ban the free distribution of single-use bags within the next few years.

Instead, consumers would be charged for bags at checkout. A paper outlining the proposal will be released next month.

The EC has been studying this issue and possible solutions, even gathering public input for three months last year. Its survey indicated public support for a bag ban by over 70% of respondents. Individual countries in the European Union have already started charging for single-use bags or banned them outright, including Ireland, Italy, France, and Wales. Read more on our website.
