Jul 27 - Plastic Industry Spends Big Fighting Seattle Bag Fee

Seattle residents will vote August 18 on whether to uphold a Seattle city council approved ordinance that puts a $0.20 fee on all carryout bags. The Seattle Times reports that the American Chemistry Council, the plastic lobby, has spent $500,000 fighting the ordinance, the largest amount spent by a single organization on a referendum in the city's recent history. Other groups of plastic bag manufacturers are likely to spend an additional $600,000, bringing the total plastic industry money spent on the ordinance well above $1 million.
