Mar 1 - Santa Clara County Approves E-Waste Policy

Bay City Newswire reports this week than Santa Clara County Supervisors voted unanimously on an e-waste procurement policy that would encourage companies that wish to do business with the county to take back and reuse old equipment still in fair condition.

Rapid advances in technology and greater demand for new features have accelerated the need for updated electronic products, leaving county governments with the burden of how to dispose of existing tons of electronic waste.

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously agreed on a policy defining how to obtain, use and dispose heaps of electronic equipment used by county agencies each year.

The new policy would require companies that sell or buy computers, televisions, fax machines, printers and other devices from county agencies to adopt procedures that minimize the environmental impact of those products.
